Carolina Consortium Wiley Journal Deal - Open Access Components

Overview: Wiley is a large, respected publisher with an emphasis on the sciences. The Carolina Consortium is pleased to announce a ground breaking read and publish deal that will provide "read" access to nearly 1500 journals, plus the OA publication of all or nearly all of our expected Wiley article output. More than forty consortium schools moved to the R&P version of this deal at the beginning of the 2022 subscription year.

Details: Corresponding authors whose articles are accepted in gold and hybrid Wiley journals (and some Hindawi journals), will be given the option of making their article Open Access (freely and openly available) at no cost. The participating Carolina Consortium institutions share a large pool of OA article entitlements that should cover most or all of our expected article output during a given year. The pool will be utilized on a first-come, first-serve basis. The consortium will monitor usage patterns to ensure that all participating institutions have an equal opportunity to publish their faculty authored works as Open Access.

How many articles are covered by the shared pool?
For 2023, we have 735, which is the Carolina Consortium's aggregate average annual Wiley article output. That number is slated to rise to 750 for 2024, but could change if institutions join or drop the group deal.

What happens if we run out?
It is possible that we could run out towards the end of a calendar year. If that happens, corresponding faculty will see a different message that says they are eligible for a discounted APC (instead of a fully funded APC via the shared entitlement program). Unused article entitlements do not carry over from one year to the next. During this three year deal (2022-2024), the entitlements will be replenished at the start of each year.

How will I know if my university's faculty are making use of the shared entitlement pool?
The consortium will send regular reports to each library.

Which Wiley and Hindawi journals are included in this deal?

• Wiley hybrid journals: your manuscript must have been accepted for publication on or after 1 January 2023
• Wiley and Hindawi fully open access journals: your manuscript must have been submitted on or after 1 January 2023.
• Exceptions: Not all Hindawi journals are part of the agreement; please check before you submit your article.

What are the benefits of Open Access publishing? What if I don't want my article to be OA?
There are numerous benefits, including expanded readership, greater impact, and higher citation rates. But authors have the right to decline the free OA benefit during the article acceptance/publication process.
