Ferguson Building opened. In 1985, it was named for James Sharbrough Ferguson, Chancellor of the University from 1967-1979.

Nelson E. Bobb was appointed as the first full-time athletic director.

The Board of Trustees approved a new Mission and Goals Statement for the University.

Mr. and Mrs. Joseph McKinley Bryan pledged $1 million to the Prospectus III campaign.

The men's soccer team won its second NCAA Division III national championship in a row.

The Summer Music Camp was established by the School of Music. The camp offers programs in band, orchestra, show choir, and piano for students of all skill levels from fourth through twelfth grades.

The Town Students Association changed its name to the Commuting Students Association.

The first African-American student was elected homecoming queen.

A Beta Gamma Sigma Chapter was established for business and administration students.

The Class of 1978 gave a display case to house the University Mace and Chain-of-Office Medallion.
