The Elements of Style
by William Strunk Jr. and E.B. White
I first used an earlier edition of this book in my undergraduate English composition course. Through the years I have continued to use it as a reference as I write. Written communication is essential in any discipline, and I think the most important practice a professor can teach a student is how to write in whatever way is necessary in that discipline. Learning to write is a life-long practice, and a book like "The Elements of Style" is a helpful companion in that journey.
