A Wrinkle in Time
by Madeleine L'Engle
As a developmental psychologist who studies parenting and adolescence, I selected this book in recognition of how my mother shaped my own love of reading when I was an adolescent. Each holiday, books were my primary gift. I would curl up on the sofa and entered a different world until I had worked my way through each and every book I received. Only when I was an adult did I think to ask how my mother managed to select such fabulous books each holiday. It turns out that every book I received was a Newbery honoree. The Newbery Award was the first children’s book award ever developed and books recognized represent the absolute best literature written for children and adolescents during a given year. I read almost every Newbery Medal or honor book before I turned eighteen and that experience played a major role in determining who I became, as a reader and a person. To represent all of the Newbery books, I have selected "A Wrinkle in Time” by Madeleine L'Engle. It received the Newbery Award in the year I was born, 1963.
