Batgirl: Year One
by Scott Beatty and Chuck Dixon
I first read Batgirl: Year One at the end of my undergraduate career, when I was facing lots of uncertainty about my future. In this updated origin story, Barbara Gordon struggles to find her place in Gotham City, where the path laid out for her isn't the one she wants to take. While none of the potential futures I saw for myself starred me as a masked crime fighter, I still took inspiration from Barbara's unwillingness to settle and resilience in the face of failure. In the pages of this book, she manages to fight the bad guys, undermine a patriarchal system, and shatter expectations, all while staying sharp at her day job. Is it a coincidence that I became a librarian, just like Barbara Gordon?
