The Sacred Universe: Earth, Spirituality, and Religion in the Twenty-First Century
by Thomas Berry
The Sacred Universe has been one of the most influential texts used in my teaching to help students understand that religion and science can be compatible and work together to protect the natural environment. Perhaps better than anyone else, Berry clearly demonstrated that ecology should be the basis for all human endeavors and that a scientific awareness of and appreciation for the emergence of life in our universe should be foundational for contemporary expressions of religion. This collection of Berry’s essays has also been instrumental in introducing my students to the important idea that a proper university education should be interdisciplinary and predicated on values promoting the protection of life on Earth.
