Written/Unwritten: Diversity and the Hidden Truths of Tenure
by Patricia A. Matthew
As a UNCG faculty during a time of heightened political discord related to racial inequality, immigration, and identity, I've found myself drawn to readings outside my discipline that directly address diversity, equity, and inclusion—particularly those that offer innovative strategies across multiple points of entry to impact broader structural change. Patricia Matthew's Written/Unwritten: Diversity and the Hidden Truths of Tenure (UNC Press, 2016) is a brave and timely collection of essays that gives voice to the marginalization that is often experienced by faculty of color in the academy. A roadmap for the next generation of scholars (i.e., our students), Written/Unwritten is a "must read" for faculty and administrators committed to promoting excellence in profound ways at UNCG and beyond.
