The Theogony
by Hesiod

Hesiod's collection of Greek mythology provides both a vivid narrative experience and a revelatory synthesis of the cosmological understandings of his time. The Theogony did not generate my interest in mythology, but it nourished that affection with stories that contrasted notably with more popular yet sanitized treatments of Greco-Roman myth. Neither this work nor the eddas and epics that ultimately followed related to my chosen field of mathematics - but therein lies the point. We should inquire beyond our own private estates and consider all that the human experience provides.
