The Mantle of the Prophet: Religion and Politics in Iran
by Roy Mottahedeh

I first read this book in graduate school, and I've been in love with it ever since. It performs that almost impossible feat of managing to be informative, scholarly, and entertaining all at once - to deliver a huge amount of information about complex issues in a palatable and even humorous way. It tells the story of the Islamic Revolution of Iran through the eyes of a young cleric of Qom, meanwhile weaving in disparate elements of the medieval and modern history of Iran. It even works in Sufism, Zoroastrianism, and classical Persian literature.
