George Winston, President of the University of North Carolina, delivered the first commencement address.

The first graduating class consisted of ten students. After graduation, they formed the Alumnae Fellowship and chose the school's motto - "service."

Anna M. Gove, MD was appointed the second campus physician.

The Cornelian Literary Society was organized. The name for the society comes from Cornelia, a Roman matron from the 2nd century BCE

The Training School was established. It was used as training and demonstration for the School's student teachers.
