William Pierson was named Acting Chancellor after the resignation of Chancellor Edward Kidder Graham.
JoAnne Smart of Raleigh, North Carolina and Bettye Ann Davis Tillman of Wadesboro, North Carolina became the first African-American students to enroll at the College. JoAnne Smart Drane later became a member of the Board of Trustees.
The College purchased the Piney Lake recreational facility in Guilford County, nine miles south of downtown Greensboro. The site is used as a laboratory for recreation majors, and as a recreational facility for students and the community.
Mereb Mossman received the O. Max Gardner Award.
The Library (Jackson Library), formerly a "closed-stacks" facility, opened its book stacks to students.
