The Child's Discovery of the Mind
by Janet Wilde Astington
This is one of the first academic books that I read as an undergraduate and it has been a useful resource throughout my career. I admire Janet Astington’s ability to present developmental science in an accessible and exciting way to scholars at all levels. On a personal note, I am also grateful to her for inviting me to participate in a scholarly meeting about the topic of this book-children’s understanding of mind and behavior-while I was an undergraduate at the University of Toronto. As a first-generation university student, I had never envisioned the possibility of an academic career for myself. The opportunity to contribute to scientific dialogue alongside experts in the field enabled me to begin to cultivate an identity as an emerging scholar. One of my greatest passions as a professor is to introduce the field of developmental science, and all of the options that it offers, to my own students.
